Now that I live in a "swing state" I have suddenly become semi-important in the political world. This is great for my political ego because I actually have some sort of small voice in the politics of my state. Unlike Utah where a Republican could win over a Democrat if his name was Myra Butt Reeks or Amanda Hug n' Kiss. I of course wouldn't change it for the world...
Now with my new found fame just because I live in a contested state I was looking forward to many lively debates and discussions in school. Unfortunately my classes have been boring videos of Chinese impressions of Americans in the 19th century and debating over whether Puritans saw a problem with the fact that they believed in predestination but still working hard to live good lives. At least that was the story until tonight...
I was just about to sit down and enjoy my spaghetti while watching the Chargers destroy the Jets when the doorbell rang. I was annoyed. I got up and answered it and two young men were there with a clipboard. They asked if John was here. I told them that he didn't live here anymore. The very next thing they said wasn't to introduce themselves or what they were doing interrupting what was going to be a great evening, eating and watching football. The next thing they said was paraphrasing, "Are you fed up with the Bush Administration?" I being an honest person said, "I have my disagreements yes." Then it started...
The first guy started talking about how we need to end the War in Iraq because we waste 10-12 billion dollars a month. I responded that I had confidence that our Congress would waste that money somewhere else if we weren't using it in Iraq. He agreed. Then he gave me the list of reasons they were out trying to organize among them were, "end the war, health care to everyone..." I have to be honest about this time I stopped listening because I knew all the talking points and I didn't care to listen anymore because my spaghetti was getting cold. He asked me if I wanted to sign up for the movement or whatever it was. I said no because I didn't believe in any of that stuff. The two mentioned something about that they won't ask for a donation. Once again I wasn't really paying that much attention; I was worried about my dinner. I told them thanks but there was no way I was going to sign anything because I held different views on the issues.
On any other night I would have asked them who they were, why they were doing this, if they were in fact campaigning for Obama, if they really believed all the crap Obama was selling them. They thanked me for my time and left. I was disappointed for the rush but as it turned out my spaghetti was cold and I missed a Charger touchdown. So far the only thing I have gotten out of Obama's grassroots campaign in Nevada is a cold dinner... I am optimistic that my new importance being a voter in Nevada will give me more chances to learn from the Obama and his "Soldiers for Change" or whatever they call themselves. They were very respectful and gracious which is more than I can say for Obama when people start digging into his past. Don't believe me go ask
Stanley Kurtz.
